Leeds United head coach candidate seen with recruitment chief at empty Elland Road after loss

Leeds United’s head coach search took a step forward at Elland Road on Sunday with the sighting of out-of-work Alfred Schreuder. The Dutchman last worked at Eredivisie giants Ajax, where he was sacked only last month after a winless run of seven matches left them fifth in the table.

Schreuder, 50, was spotted by LeedsLive walking through Elland Road’s John Charles Stand in the aftermath of Sunday’s loss to Manchester United. Schreuder was seen with head of European recruitment Gaby Ruiz and another member of Victor Orta’s recruitment team.

It is understood talks with Schreuder are in their infancy and it remains to be seen whether he will be appointed as Jesse Marsch’s replacement. The Daily Telegraph had earlier reported Schreuder was under consideration for the position on Sunday.

The former Club Brugge and 1899 Hoffenheim boss has come into the picture after United found talks with Andoni Iraola were stymied by Rayo Vallecano owner Raul Martin Presa. Arne Slot, the current Feyenoord boss, then ruled himself out of the running on Friday.

Marcelo Gallardo, previously of River Plate, is also admired, but is understood to want a break from frontline management until the summer. There remain two other names on United’s shortlist, who are in work, but Schreuder is the first of any target to be seen at Elland Road.

The Whites next take to the field on Saturday at Goodison Park, where Everton, a fellow relegation battler, will host them. On Sunday afternoon, Michael Skubala said it would be helpful for everyone inside the club to see an appointment as soon as possible.
