Leeds United handed Cody Gakpo transfer boost amid Liverpool and Arsenal interest

PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo could use Leeds United as a stepping stone into the Premier League, as per reports from Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer. As the Whites prepare for the likely departure of Brazilian winger Raphinha, Gakpo has been touted as a possible replacement.

The 23-year-old contributed 21 goals and 15 assists in 46 outings across all competitions last season and has attracted interest from Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. Although PSV are not actively looking to sell, a bid in the region of £34million could persuade the Dutch side to let Gakpo leave.

This would require Leeds to break their club transfer record, which is currently held by Rodrigo, for whom Leeds paid Valencia a fee of £27million in the summer of 2020. Gakpo is inspired by the route former PSV midfielder Gini Wijnaldum took when he joined Liverpool via a spell at Newcastle United in 2015-16.

Timmer tweeted on the Gakpo situation: “The management of Cody Gakpo speaks with Leeds United as it has previously with, among others, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.

“PSV want about 40 million euros for Gakpo. He now also sees a route like Wijnaldum via the foreign sub-top to the top.”
