Leeds United fans handed away-day boost as train strike called off

The RMT has announced planned railway strikes in March and April have been called off.

Union members from across 14 railway operators were set to walk out on March 30 and April 1. This would've caused possible travel disruption for those wanting to attend Leeds United's Premier League fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on April 1.

However, the RMT have suspended industrial action after a breakthrough in the long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

The RMT Union tweeted: "Strike action suspended. Following further discussions between the RMT Union and the Rail Delivery Group earlier today, industrial action scheduled for 30th March and 1st April is suspended."

The Rail Delivery Group, who are representing the rail firms in negotiations, have tabled a new offer today. The RMT said after the offer was received it decided to halt future action so further talks could take place.

A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson added: "We welcome this positive step by the leadership of the RMT to call off their planned action on March 30 and April 1. This is great news for our customers and for our staff.

"We are now jointly focused on working constructively towards a settlement to this dispute, which will mean we can do what we have always wanted to do - give our people a pay rise and help secure the long-term future of the railway with rewarding careers for all those who work on it."
