Leeds United draw marked 'turning point' as Dean Whitehead calls on Cardiff to 'up their standards'

Cardiff City interim boss Dean Whitehead insists the 2-2 draw against Leeds United in the original meeting marked a turning point for 'one or two players'.

Mark Hudson made eight changes when Leeds travelled to the Cardiff City Stadium earlier this month, with a number of them enforced by injury. Their two goal scorers on that afternoon, Sheyi Ojo and Jaden Philogene, retained their places in the starting XI in Saturday's draw against Wigan, along with Curtis Nelson and Isaak Davies.

Hudson was relieved of his duties after their 1-1 draw against the Latics after just four months at the helm. Former Stoke and Sunderland midfielder Whitehead has been installed as interim manager, and will take charge of Cardiff's trip to Elland Road.

Whitehead was impressed by those who stepped up in the absence of a number of regular starters against the Whites, but has urged his players to 'up their standards' in Wednesday's replay.

"You gain confidence all the time in matches, and that was a big turning point for one or two players who came in, performed and stayed in the team. Now it's up to everybody to up their standards," Whitehead told Cardiff City's official website.

"We had players who stepped up for their chance, and we have players who are going to do that again. They have to take their opportunity; everyone has to step up, stand up and be counted.

"It's an opportunity for any player who hasn't had the minutes they would have liked. It gives them a chance, now that they've got the shirt. It keeps people in contention, and puts pressure on the ones who are playing."
