Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell is reportedly set for a medical at Millwall ahead of a season-long-loan switch, according to the Athletic. The Lions agreed terms with Leeds last week over a deal for Cresswell and are now expected to complete the formalities of the deal in the coming days.
The 19-year-old was granted an extra week of holiday after featuring in all four of England U21s’ European Qualifying campaign at the beginning of June. Cresswell featured seven times for Leeds in all competitions last season but with Robin Koch, Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk all currently ahead of him, regular football is the next stage of his development.
Millwall finished ninth in the Championship last season but are understood to be committing resources to a concerted push next term. George Honeyman has arrived from Hull City, Benik Afobe from Stoke City and Zian Flemming is a club-record signing from the Dutch topflight.
The terms offered within the loan deal to acquire Cresswell have impressed Leeds and it is likely the move will go through before Leeds jet off for their pre-season tour to Australia. Rowett’s track record with young players is also of importance to Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch, as they consider the best coach for Cresswell’s development.
Nine months of regular football in front of a crowd as hostile as Millwall’s has also come into the thinking when plotting Cresswell’s next step. Getting a full campaign under his belt with that kind of atmosphere around him should only better prepare him for life at Elland Road.
He could be one of a number of loan outgoings from Leeds to the Championship this week, with Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton also likely to be moving on.
