Leeds United defended over Marcelo Bielsa sacking as ex Scotland star tips Jesse Marsch to turn it around

Eddie Gray has said that Leeds United were right to make the decision to remove Marcelo Bielsa as manager as the club headed towards relegation from the Premier League and has been impressed by new incumbent, Jesse Marsch.

The Scot made over 450 appearances for the Elland Road outfit and has served two stints in the managerial hot-seat at Leeds so is perhaps more qualified than most to know what the culture is all about.

Gray told the Daily Mail: “The club did the right thing. You couldn't see the run of defeats coming to an end. Marcelo never really showed any emotion.

“The players responded to him but when you are struggling and you don't have that personal affinity with the players, it becomes difficult. When things start going wrong, you need an arm around you and that wasn't his nature.

"So far Jesse has done very well. If you come in and communicate with the players, you get their respect and everything runs smoothly. Don (Revie) was like that. Jesse is a completely different type of personality to Marcelo but he shows the type of passion and enthusiasm that Leeds fans like.”

Victories against Norwich and Wolves have brought some respite but with crunch games for other teams towards the relegation zone, Leeds are due to welcome Southampton on Saturday.

The international break has meant that Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips could be in contention to play a part in proceedings.

Marsch told a press conference on Thursday: “I think they’re both probably not fully 90 minutes fit but really close, I don’t think we can start both of them because then it’s already potentially two subs we have to make but I think that we will think very carefully, we’ll have a meeting today about exactly where they are.

“I’ve spoken with both of them already and they both are feeling good and they both are looking even better so we’re obviously really excited to have them in the group now and think they can both have a massive impact in our team.

“Even though we have got six points and we have relieved some of the stress in terms of where we are in the table, the best way to continue to control that is to make sure that we are really focused on every performance every day and maximising what we are doing.”
