Leeds United Championship promotion odds offers room for optimism despite ownership limbo

Leeds United are being tipped for an immediate Premier League return judging by the betting markets.

The Whites have much uncertainty ahead of the new season, with a proposed takeover and the appointment of a new manager needed on top of the inevitable rebuild of the playing squad. Despite that, most still have Leeds towards the top of their promotion odds.

Bet365 have Leicester City as favourites for both their promotion and their winning the title outright markets, but Leeds are second in both with odds of 7/1 to win the league, and 2/1 to win promotion. They're ahead of the other relegated team Southampton in both markets, with only two sides winning automatic promotion and a third side decided via the play-offs between sides finishing between third and sixth.

Leeds will have the advantage of Premier League parachute payments which are estimated to be a payment of around £40m in the first season, which will give them the ability to carry a higher wage bill than the majority of their Championship rivals next season. In recent years, the chances of winning promotion when in receipt of the payments has increased significantly.

That explains why Leeds are so heavily tipped, despite the many changes that are likely to happen between now and the start of the new season. And Leeds will have to hope their summer rebuild is more akin to Burnley's last summer than Norwich or Watford, who both failed to even make the play-offs after their relegation.

Bet365 don't expect any of the three relegated sides to suffer double relegation though. The last side to do that were Sunderland back in 2018, with the Wearsiders falling to League One having been a Premier League side two years prior. But Bet365 rank Leeds as the joint-least favourite to suffer relegation next season with odds of 50/1 for all three of the sides dropping out of the top flight this summer.
