Leeds United boardroom silence on January transfer window broken with more deals in the offing

Business is far from finished at Leeds United in the January transfer window with outgoing loans expected following Georginio Rutter’s arrival at Elland Road. Chief executive Angus Kinnear has broken his silence on the window with an admission the club’s young talent should follow Harry Kane’s example in the second tier.

Joe Gelhardt is understood to be applying the finishing touches to a loan deal with Wigan Athletic and may not be the only Elland Road exit judging by Kinnear’s comments. With playing time proving tough for the 20-year-old in the first half of the season, the emergence of Wilfried Gnonto, recovery of Patrick Bamford and arrival of Rutter are not going to make pitch time easier to come by.

The Whites supremo acknowledge the pathway of England’s captain in outlining why Leeds would look to push its best young players out for a few months. Kane had loans with Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before he eventually broke through with Tottenham Hotspur.

“Rutter’s arrival will mean we will be looking to make some outbound loans before the end of the transfer window,” he said. “We believe being more active in loaning out our emerging talent will be important in ultimately accelerating their ability to contribute to our first team.

“Harry Kane had four different loan spells before he became England’s best striker and Championship experience is a significant step up from competing in Premier League 2.”

Leo Hjelde has already moved out on loan this month. The defender will be with Championship relegation battlers Rotherham United until the end of the season.
