Leeds nursery praised for Covid changes scores 'outstanding' report

A Leeds nursery has seen its Ofsted rating go from 'good' to 'outstanding', with the establishment given top marks in every department.

New Beginnings Day Nursery at Park Spring Primary School in Leeds achieved top marks following an inspection on May 25, 2022. It was previously rated 'good' but now has the highest accolade Ofsted can award in its ratings.

The Pudsey day care centre was given top marks in every department, with a score of 'outstanding' for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management. The inspectors could not sing the nursery's praises high enough, with the report stating that children make "excellent progress" thanks to staff being "excellent role models".

Ofsted deemed the "overall effectiveness" of the Wellstone Avenue nursery - including its staff and management - deserving of 'outstanding' status. The inspector noted: "Children make exceptional progress at this nursery. Staff are excellent role models. The atmosphere is professional, warm and welcoming. Staff have high expectationsof children, whose behaviour is exemplary.

"Children show their friends kindness and consideration. For example, two-year-old children invite each other to play by offering to share their toys. Older children encourage one another to try again and then applaud each other's achievements.

"Children have extremely strong bondswith their key persons. These attachments help children to settle into nursery quickly. As a result, children feel very safe and secure. For example, babies enjoy cuddles with their key person. Staff stroke patterns into the palms of babies' hands. Babies smile and laugh back at them."

The inspector noted a "truly ambitious" curriculum and said that children demonstrate a "deep level of engagement" during learning activities. They added: "The manager ensures that no child is left behind and has equal ambitions for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

"These children receive expert support and progress rapidly. Children's learning is well planned and sequenced by staff. Children are continuously supported and challenged to be independent. Some changes were made to routines to keep children safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents support these changes wholeheartedly."

*A previous version of this story said that Park Spring Primary School had achieved 'outstanding' Ofsted status. This was incorrect and has now been amended to New Beginnings Day Nursery.
