Leeds Sant Angelo restaurant boss says Wetherspoons takeover plans are 'amazing'

The owner of Sant' Angelo's in Wetherby, which is now being converted into a Wetherspoons, has made her own intervention into the debate.

Controversy around the site has been building over recent days with many residents stating their opposition to the idea. Retired head teacher Derek, who lives in Wetherby, said: “It’s not very good. I don’t like Wetherspoon. They tend to create a disturbance. There’s a lot of drunkenness and unpleasant behaviour.

“Sant’ Angelo was always a conservative unit, there was a lot of activity but there was never any fuss. It was packed out and it was so supported, it’s just a shame the family are no longer running it.”

However, Catherine Spence, who owned Sant' Angelo's has come out in support of the plans. In a statement she made on Facebook she said she thought the plans were "amazing" and would bring the property back to its "former glory".

She said: "Just to let everyone know , we have now vacated SantAngelo’s and JD Wetherspoon are the proud owners of The Angel. Their plans are amazing and will bring the property back to its former glory and more, in particular I love what they have in mind for the outside area. It will be their flagship venue.

"Once again , thank you to the people of Wetherby and beyond for the support over many years and all the well wishes we’ve received.

"I’ll definitely miss the restaurant life, so many of our loyal customers and most of all my work family, but it’s time for me to hang up my apron and have an easier life."
