Leeds salon blames city centre traffic as it closes after 20 years

A popular Leeds city centre beauty salon has closed its Boar Lane premises after 20 years.

Mint Nail and Beauty Salon, in Trevelyn Square, has said "with a heavy heart" the business has suffered on the back of the Covid-19 and the ongoing traffic issues in the city centre. The main changes will be Thirsk Row and King Street being made into two-way streets, these form part of the council's plans to remove general traffic away from the area.

Sadly the works have left an eyesore outside many businesses in the area. Mint, which also has chains in Sheffield's Meadowhall and Leeds' White Rose Shopping Centre, said the council's plans have had "a negative impact on us".

Announcing the news of the closure, a spokesperson for Mint said: "Dear Valued Mint Leeds City Centre Clients, it is with a heavy heart that we tell you that after more than 20 years of Mint Leeds City Centre on Boar Lane we are leaving the unit. This will not be the end of the Mint Leeds City Centre story though. We are looking for another suitable & smaller site in the Leeds City Centre so please watch this space and we will keep you informed.

"Our team are moving to other Mint salons in The White Rose Shopping Centre - Leeds, Meadowhall - Sheffield and The Beauty Rooms in Wakefield for now," They added: "We are so sorry that it has come to this but the legacy of Covid and the change in how people work impacted the city centre more than our shopping centre sites.

"This was compounded by the recent changes to the traffic flow through Leeds City Centre. We are sure that in time this will have a positive impact on the City but at this time it has had a negative impact on us."

In a further update, Clare and Kathryn from Team Mint, Leeds, confirmed a new salon in Leeds city centre will be opening. They added: "Mint Leeds City Centre is on the move! We are so sad to be leaving our old home but we have some exciting news which we are hoping to share with you very soon .

"There will be a short break but we will be back as soon as we can! Please watch this space and check our website for updates."
