Leeds rooftop bar and restaurant East 59th shuts without warning amid 'spiralling costs'

A popular Leeds bar and restaurant has suddenly closed without warning.

East 59th, overlooking Kirkgate Market in Leeds city centre, traded in Leeds for five years and proved to be a popular spot for revellers. National reports suggest 'spiralling costs' are to blame for parent company D&D London's decision to close restaurants across the country, including in London and the historic Klosterhaus in Bristol.

It comes after energy prices for businesses more than doubled over the past 12 months thanks to the cost of living crisis.

The rooftop penthouse restaurant in Victoria Gate, owned by D&D London, was one of Leeds' favourite rooftop cocktail bars and restaurants. But a notice on its website now reads: "Dear friends, please note that East 59th has now closed, however, we would be delighted to welcome you at one of our sister restaurants.

"...Thank you for your support over the past five years and we look forward to seeing you soon."

A spokesperson for D&D said: "East 59th is a great space and has developed a popular bar & rooftop dining scene since we opened the restaurant five years ago. But with the current economic challenges including spiralling utility, food and beverage costs and the unstable labour market we have sadly, after much consideration, decided to cease trading in this restaurant.

"D&D London intend to look after the restaurants’ greatly valued staff and management and wherever possible will seek to offer exciting positions in our other venues. D&D restaurants, however, continue to trade well and have had a very positive December despite the ongoing industrial disputes effecting transport.

"We are particularly proud of our latest opening Orelle, in Birmingham; an 88-cover restaurant located on the 24th floor of 103 Colmore Row. The new site which opened only two months ago is trading very well, exceeding our revenue projections."
