Leeds Rhinos' pre-season match overshadowed by Headingley's sandy pitch

Leeds Rhinos supporters received an unexpected surprise upon their arrival at Headingley, with one part of the pitch covered in sand. The Super League outfit, whose season begins in just a few weeks, hosted Bradford Bulls in a pre-season match on Sunday as part of their preparations.

However, the Rhinos will be hoping the team is in a better state than the pitch, with one section of the playing surface seemingly in need of some attention. The sandy area covers twenty metres of the pitch, the area of the field that was covered by a stage when the stadium hosted the first event in city's year of culture celebrations three weeks ago.

Headingley hosted 'The Awakening', which was the first of several events taking place across the city as part of the year-long celebrations. Hosted by Gabby Logan and Sanchez Pain, the likes of Corinne Bailey-Rae and Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce performed at the event.

However, it appears to have had a derogatory impact on the playing surface ahead of their game against the Bulls. The Rhinos will be hopeful that it improves ahead of their first home Super League game of the season which takes place against Hull FC on February 24th.

Many poked fun at the pitch online as photos emerged. Gilly Clarke tweeted: "Who won the toss and bats first?". Mick Rhodes added: "Blackpool would be proud of that beach."
