Leeds Rhinos kick off City of Culture celebrations as Headingley hosts 'The Awakening'

Leeds Rhinos' Headingley Stadium got the city's year of culture celebrations off to a spectacular start on Saturday night. The stadium hosted 'The Awakening' the first of countless events taking place in the city as part of celebrations that will last for the next 365 days.

Hosted by Gabby Logan and Sanchez Pain, attendees were treated to a mix of music, comedy and much more, with Rhinos legend Jamie Jones-Buchanan even getting involved. The Grand Final winning back-rower was joined by Paralympian Kadeena Cox while musical acts included Corinne Bailey-Rae and Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce.

The Rhinos were active on social media during the event, posting several clips and getting behind the occasion.

The event was heavily praised by people who attended. Ellen Hunter was among those who went and posted: Massive well done on that launch event and everyone who took part! Top performances from amazingly talented Leeds folk. Can't wait to experience more this year."

The Rhinos won't be back in action at the ground for several weeks, with three of their final four pre-season games against Leigh Leopards, Hull KR and Hunslet all away from home. They host Bradford Bulls on January 29th. They also start the Super League season away to Warrington Wolves. Their first home game of the regular season is against Hull FC on Friday, February 24th.
