Leeds Rhinos halfback makes Championship switch in enterprising loan deal

Leeds Rhinos youngster Kai Morgan has linked up with Halifax Panthers on a short-term loan. The halfback, who played a key role in the Rhinos Academy's Grand Final success last year, is set to feature for his hometown club in their upcoming pre-season fixtures.

Fax play Wakefield Trinity on Sunday followed by a hit-out against Hunslet a week later. The two-week loan will allow the Siddal product to feature in both games and get a taste of senior rugby.

Morgan, 18, made his Academy debut in 2018 and has gone on to feature in the reserves during his development. He made his first-team debut in the Rhinos' pre-season fixture against Bradford Bulls last year, scoring a try in the 30-12 win at Odsal.

Fax are currently on the lookout for a spine player to add depth to their squad and while there are no current plans for Morgan's stay to last beyond the upcoming fixtures, the games will allow him to impress head coach Simon Grix. He is thought to have caught the eye when the Rhinos did an opposed session with the Panthers as part of their pre-season preparations.

"He's a local lad who we're going to take on for a couple of weeks," Grix confirmed. "It's good for him and it's good for us as we work our way through the pre-season.

"Kai is coming to stage where he needs some men's rugby and we're in a position where we need an extra option to rotate our halves during the games, so it works for everyone."
