Leeds Rhinos face competition for Lachlan Fitzgibbon as Super League side enter race

Leeds Rhinos face competition for their NRL target Lachlan Fitzgibbon. Rugby League Live understands Warrington Wolves have also shown interest in signing the Newcastle Knights forward, who is off-contract at the end of the season.

Rugby League Live revealed last month that Leeds had shown some interest in signing Fitzgibbon, the back-rower who is keen to explore his options in the UK. The 29-year-old, who has been a regular for Newcastle all season, is said to be very interested in a new challenge in Super League, having spent his entire career with the Knights.

With 110 appearances under his belt, Warrington's interest comes with a desire to extend their options n the back-row. Matty Nicholson and Ben Currie are both front-line options in the position but the Wire are lacking options beyond that. Peter Mata'utia has been used in the role while Thomas Mikaele, who was capable of playing in the position, has left the club.

Leeds have a number of their back-row options off-contract, most notably James Bentley and Zane Tetevano. Sam Walters, who has also been used there, is heading to Wigan. The Rhinos aren't thought to have made a signing for 2024 yet but do have Fitzgibbon down as a target.

A relatively decent shake-up appears likely at Leeds, with several players off-contract. Aidan Sezer, James Bentley and Zane Tetevano are among the big earners in the final months of their existing deals, as well as David Fusitu'a and Blake Austin. Cap space would gie Rohan Smith considerable flexibility to mould his squad for 2024.
