Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith comments on Jack Broadbent's future amid Castleford Tigers interest

Leeds Rhinos boss Rohan Smith has commented on Jack Broadbent’s future amid interest from Castleford Tigers. Castleford are understood to have a made a move for Braoadbent who is in the final year of his contract at Headingley Stadium.

The Tigers have identified Broadbent as someone who can offer plenty to their squad and it is thought a deal to take him to Wheldon Road for next season is close to completion. The outside-back has struggled for game time this season, making just five appearances and failing to get over the line in any of them.

Smith was asked about Rugby League Live’s report in his pre-match press conference this afternoon and it’s fair to say he wasn’t giving too much away.

“I don’t read publications so I’m not aware of where he may or may not be going,” Smith said ahead of the Rhinos’ Super League clash with Wakefield Trinity.

“Obviously players that are off-contract have the opportunity to explore their options, as do we, so I won’t be making too many comments about players and where they may or may not be.”

Broadbent has been linked with a move to Hull KR in the past, but he seems destined to leave Leeds at the end of the season to link up with Lee Radford’s squad. Smith has only been with the Rhinos a couple of weeks after making the move from the NRL to West Yorkshire and he will still be getting to grips with the situation and the squad he has inherited.

However, with a host of key faces approaching the end of their current contracts with the Rhinos, the club are working on contract renewals with an eye on next season and beyond.

“We’re getting there,” Smith added. “Understanding how the salary cap operates and what people are valued at over here is something that I’ve been spending a little bit of time on with a few other people at the club.

“There’s some discussions there that have taken place for sure.”
