Leeds has been named as the second best spot in the UK for a takeaway.
The West Yorkshire city has been applauded for its fish and chip takeaways in particular, new research reveals. In a recent survey by Jackpotjoy, the online gaming operator set out to find the UK city with the greatest proportion of takeaways to local people.
Norwich has been won the crown of the UK’s ‘Takeaway Capital’, according to new research. Norwich scored an impressive 92 out of 100 in Jackpotjoy’s ranking system, with 21.1 takeaway restaurants per 10,000 people, and a total of 33.9 online takeaway searches per 10,000 people every month.

Leeds gained 90 points out of 100 and Manchester 76 to claim the second and third positions, but Manchester takes the crown for best ratio of takeaways to people. On average, there are nearly 500,000 internet searches for takeaway suggestions each month, however it’s a great British classic that is overwhelmingly searched for the most.
According to the findings, more than 200k people (201,000) search for fish and chip recommendations each month. Leeds' fish and chips were named as the city's best takeaway dish, and second best in the UK.
Birmingham was the only city in the study for which pizza was the top takeaway of choice, with 9,900 Brummies' searching for ‘pizza takeaway near me’ every month. Meanwhile, Stoke-on-Trent residents would take a chow mein over chips any day (880 searches). Whilst Glasgow (3600), Leicester (1900), Coventry (1600) and Cardiff (880) would all rather tuck into a tikka masala.
Having discovered the UK’s overwhelming love for fish and chips, Jackpotjoy then quizzed 2,000 UK adults on what they’d typically order, to reveal the nation’s most loved takeaway meal.
Battered cod is the nation’s top tier ‘chippie’ order by a landslide, with six out of ten (60%) UK adults choosing this as their typical order. Battered haddock comes a close second with a third (33%) of the votes.
A quarter (26%) of UK adults typically order a battered sausage, while one in five (20%) prefer to keep it simple and would prefer a batter-free sausage instead.
The nation’s top ten chippie orders:
1. Battered cod
2. Battered haddock
3. Battered sausage
4. Sausage
5. Fish cake
6. Donner kebab
7. Steak pie

Alex Fagelson, Head of Brand at Jackpotjoy said: "With the UK having such an amazing variety of takeaways on offer, we wanted to pin down whether there are any particular ‘foodie’ cities that are the winners when it comes to takeaways. According to our data, Norwich wins the title of UK’s ‘Takeaway Capital’ thanks to its great number of takeaway restaurants and love of all things takeaway.
"Looking at our research, it is clear that people up and down the UK can agree on one thing – there’s nothing better than a chippie tea with salt and vinegar for bringing people together. Keeping things simple and classic is a huge preference!"
