Leeds hit by horrific smell as awful mystery stench engulfs city

An area in the North of Leeds is engulfed by a thick smelling stench that smells like "cheese and manure being heated up ".

Roundhay, in Leeds has been covered by the terrible smell, that people say its so strong you can even smell it from the city centre. The stench is angering residents, even more so because they can't quite figure out where its coming from.

One resident said the smell was so bad he checked the bottom of his shoes, thinking he had stepped on some dog doo. Some residents claim its not the first time such a smell has covered the area, and they blame a mystery farmer who they say uses "human manure" as fertiliser.

And the smell has been going about for some days, with one resident first picking it up on Monday, May 15.

Alex Evans, a resident of Cookridge, said: "I first noticed the smell while out cycling towards Golden Acre park on Monday.

"The smell is so pungent, like cheese and manure being heated up. I just assumed it was a farm next to the cycle track, but today I've noticed it outside in the garden as well.

"I've spoken to a few people who said they can smell it as well. I was told it was some kind of manure spreading near the airport and the wind is carrying the rancid stench right across the valley."

On Reddit, several residents complained of the smell, saying it smelled pretty much like "S***". On a post, one resident wrote, "Anyone know what's causing the s**** smell around Roundhay? Thought I'd knocked a hole in the soil pipe this morning is was so bad. Just walked up to street lane and I can smell it all the way up there."

Another user responded, saying: "They’re spreading s*** in Yeadon by the airport and it’s blown all over Leeds. It’s f***** rank it’s not like normal slurry/ manure it smells like dog s***".

Another user said the smell was so bad it gives him Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He said: "There's many farms using human manure. It smells like nothing you've ever known.

"If you're too close it sticks to your clothes and hair. I don't want to describe it more than that because I don't want PTSD flashbacks. Could be the same thing, thankfully the smell didn't reach my area somehow!?"

Other users say its spread further than Rounday. One said: "The smell is at Moortown as well. It's been horrible!" while another said: "I was working outside in Gledhow and kept getting smells of dog s** intermittently on the afternoon. Was loosing my mind trying to figure out where it was. At least I wasn’t imagining it!"

Another said: "I thought i was losing my mind. It was in Seacroft too this afternoon" and another said: "I was checking my shoes over on Crossgates, so that's what it was. Can't believe it travelled that far."

One said: "It's now in city centre too..." while many others spoke about checking the bottom their shoes, saying: "Also looked at my shoes 10 times after leaving the house. Saw 2 builders who were also doing the same!"

Leeds City Council and the Environment Agency have been contacted for comment.
