Leeds family and toddler sleeping in car with clothes and 'not much more' as cost of living crisis bites

A family struck down by the cost of living crisis were found sleeping in their car Friday night with "not much".

Vulnerable Citizen Support Leeds who 'help the most destitute people in society' and provide food for vulnerable people in Leeds were "sad" when they got a call about a couple and a toddler sleeping rough.

The three were found sleeping in a Kia using a few of their clothes to keep them warm. "They had a few bags of clothing and not much more", Vulnerable Citizen Support said.

During a time when bills and accommodation costs are putting a huge strain on people's pockets, there is a risk that more people will sleep rough for the first time, as households struggle to make ends meet. It will also threaten the progress of people who have rebuilt their lives after homelessness.

Speaking about the vulnerable family found sleeping in their car in Leeds, Vulnerable Citizen Support said: "Sadly this morning we got a phone call of two adults sleeping rough in their car. When we got their we realised that it wasn’t just the adults but a small toddler as well.

"With only a few bags of clothing & not much more. Once again we come across a situation that isn’t a normal one we deal with.

"It's becoming more and more common as we go on." Helping the family, the support unit put them in a hotel for the weekend.

"We can see what we can do Monday morning", they added. "Our aim is to carry on with hotel fees - and maybe a bond to get them into a home before it starts getting too cold."

The support team say they are looking for a private rented property for them to stay in. What's more, after sharing the post on social media, a number of people have come forward in Leeds to offer a spare room for them to stay in.

Dawn Currie Clough said: "Such sad times we are living in. This should not be happening in this day and age."

"Homelessness is going to start rising more, it's sad really sad", Donna Evans added.
