Leeds drivers told to take the bus or cycle as more roadworks to cause traffic misery

More roadworks have been announced in Leeds city centre, that will last until the end of the year and are 'likely to lead to congestion'.

Leeds City Council have warned all city centre drivers that Bishopgate Street and Neville Street will be reduced to one lane from Monday, May 23 and are expected to remain as such until the end of the year. As key routes into the centre for many, commuters are advised to change their routes.

The council has suggested drivers swap to public transport or cycling, or if they must drive, try coming off at Junction 4 of the M621 instead of Junctions 3 and 2. Junction 2 is still affected by the works at Armley Gyratory.

These roadworks precede proposals to stop through traffic on City Square entirely - the process of this is expected to begin later in 2022 if it receives final approval. The lane closures also preliminary work to be carried out for big improvements to Leeds station that will see New Station Street and Bishopgate transformed.

Leeds Council said it would be working to keep disruption to a minimum and access to businesses would be maintained. The closures will follow the A64 Regent Street flyover reopening in an attempt to minimise disruption.

Leeds City Councillor Helen Hayden, executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “We appreciate these works will cause some disruption and we are working to keep this to a minimum and we thank people in advance for their patience.

"However the works are essential in order to begin the major transformational work at the entrance to the station, and it’s important that we encourage people to plan ahead to reduce any affect it has on their journey.

"At the same time, as these works begin ahead of the proposed upcoming closure of City Square to through-traffic, we hope that this acts as an opportunity for motorists to consider how they travel into the city and consider alternative modes of transport over the longer-term.”
