Leeds City Council 'won't rule out' return of German Christmas market to the city

Leeds City Council has refused to comment on the future of the German Christmas Market, which has been cancelled for the third year in a row.

The council made the decision alongside their partners in Frankfurt after the market had already been cancelled throughout the pandemic. Instead, the council will be hosting another Ice Cube @ Christmas event.

This means Millennium Square will play host to an outdoor ice rink alongside local and international street foods and drinks with winter themed rides.

However, the council has not yet made any announcement on possible future events. They said: "We cannot comment on future years at this time." This means the market may return in future.

Leeds City Council's full statement said: "The German Christmas Market has not been held in Leeds since 2019. Following the pandemic and combined with foreign travel work visa costs and complications, it was mutually agreed with our friends in Frankfurt that it was no longer feasible to bring the German market back to Leeds.

“Working with our local partners and building on the success of last year’s inaugural Ice Cube @ Christmas event, we will once again be hosting the hugely popular outdoor ice rink in Millennium Square along with local and international street food and drink and winter themed rides and attractions for all the family.

“We are committed to making sure Christmas in Leeds is always an exciting and memorable time and work with our partners across the city on a programme of festive activities.

“We are also aware of some fake Facebook events and stories circulating with regards to a Leeds German Christmas Market which is not correct. For details of the city’s Christmas programme soon to be announced visit www.visitleeds.co.uk."
