An actor originally from Leeds has gone missing while hiking in the southern California mountains.
Julian Sands, who was born in Otley, was reported missing on Friday (January 13) evening in the Baldy Bowl area. Local authorities continued to look for the 65-year-old over the weekend. Sands is known for his work in A With A View, Warlock and Leaving Las Vegas. He has also appeared on TV in Banshee, Smallville and 24.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's department has urged people to be careful and heed warnings because of the weather in the area. Over the last four weeks, the force said its search and rescue team has responded to 14 calls on Mount Baldy.
A spokesperson for the department said: "On Friday, January 13, at about 7:30 pm, a hiker, identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area. Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue crews responded and began a search. Because of avalanche risks and trail conditions, the ground crews were pulled off the mountain on Saturday evening.
“However, we continue to search by helicopter and drones when the weather permits.” Teams will also do more ground searches once weather improves and it is safe for rescue crews.
Sands has lived in Los Angeles since 2020. He was most recently in Benediction with Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi. He shares a son with former Evening Standard and Today editor Sarah Sands, who he was married to from 1984 to 1987. He shares two daughters with Evgenia Citkowitz, a journalist he married in 1990.
