Leeds 8-hour Met Office thunder warning for this weekend with chance of flooding and hail

A thunderstorm warning has been issued for Leeds on Sunday with residents warned to expect a chance of localised flooding.

The warning issued by the Met Office this morning is in place between 1pm and 9pm tomorrow. It warns of thunderstorms developing throughout the afternoon and into the evening with a chance of flooding.

The current forecasts place the worst of the storms in the Leeds area between 3pm and 6pm. Lighter spells of rain can be expected from 1pm until 9pm with skies clearing after that point.

The detailed forecast from the Met Office said: "Whilst there remains some uncertainty in whether thunderstorms develop as cooler conditions follow from the west, there is a chance that an organised line of thunderstorms could develop across northern Britain during Sunday afternoon before clearing east into the North Sea during the evening.

"This is more likely to happen across eastern parts of the warning area including northeast England and eastern Scotland. Rainfall amounts will vary significantly, but some locations could see 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours. Frequent lightning, large hail (up to 3 cm in diameter) and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards."

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings and temporary outdoor structures from floodwater, lightning strikes, large hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance that some communities become temporarily cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

The Met Office warning impact matrix rates this event as low likelihood and medium impact. This means that while the majority may not be affected by the storms, those that are can expect significant disruption.
