Lee Johnson in Hibs message to Josh Doig as he says Italy transfer may 'take him to another level'

Hibs manager Lee Johnson has confirmed Josh Doig is flying out to Italy to talk personal terms and agree a transfer to Serie A side Hellas Verona.

The 20-year-old left-back was left out of the 5-0 Premier Sports Cup win over Clyde as he irons out his seven-figure exit from Easter Road. Johnson has confirmed a deal is close for a player who has enjoyed two successful seasons as a Hibs first team player.

Doig was linked with several moves away from the club last summer and former head coach Jack Ross left him out of last season's opening Premiership match at Motherwell as one appeared near. Instead he stuck around at Hibs and is now set to follow the likes of Leith hero Ewan Henderson and Scotland international Aaron Hickey in having a go in Italy: Johnson told the Scotsman of the 20-year-old: “It was probably too big a risk [to play him] with the transfer close, which it is.

"We've accepted a bid and the player has to go across to Italy and talk about personal terms. It could easily fall down and if it does, we'll welcome him back with open arms.

"If not, we need to make sure that we utilise any funds available well and congratulate him on a fantastic move.

"I think he's a good young player. He's got a lot to work on in his game but who hasn't at that age? Physically he's a real powerhouse and that's what stands out more than anything.

"He's a good guy with a good growth mindset and he's a good student, and I think it'll be great for him.

"The Italian game is very defensive, very organised, a lot of drilling and I think that's the sort of thing that could take him to another level, in a really good league."
