Lee Johnson admits Hibs in 'really good shape' as Ben Kensell keen for lengthy run in Europe

Lee Johnson admits everything is set up for a good season at Hibs.

The Easter Road outfit are back in pre-season training as they get preparations underway for the new Scottish Premiership campaign and their crack at Europe. The Hibees enter the Europa Conference League at the second qualifying round stage and will face one of Víkingur Gøta or Inter Club d’Escaldes over a two-legged tie.

The capital club will need to negotiate THREE ties in order to reach the group stage proper but Johnson is happy with his early transfer business with his side in 'really good shape'. Martin Boyle is due to return from long-term injury very soon while Adam Le Fondre and Jordan Obita have joined Jojo Wollacott in penning on the dotted line.

The Hibs boss said: "We're in really good shape. Naturally there's always an evolution of a squad in every window so that won't be any different.

"The outs are as important as the ins as well, because players need an opportunity to play football.

"But with Martin Boyle potentially coming back soon as well, Adam Le Fondre will give us that nous around the boex.

"We've signed Jordan Obita, who I know well because I had him at Oldham and Brian McDermott knows him well from Reading.

"We know what we're getting, we know the league. We put ourselves in a position for Europe and everything is set up for a good season."

Hibs chief Ben Kensell is keen to see Johnson and Co go on an extended Euro run and explained the benefits of doing so. Speaking to Edinburgh Evening News, he said: “It makes a difference to be in Europe but the further we progress the more revenue we have to spend in the window, so what you might see is some late activity as a result of that, depending on the progression in that competition.

“But equally it means growth for Hearts and Aberdeen so we have to look on it as comparable with the clubs we compare ourselves with, and with who we are fighting for similar players.

"We’re all probably in the same boat, although Aberdeen have a competitive advantage as a result of [group-stage football], like Hearts did last year.

"That’s what we’re in it for, that’s the excitement of being competitive across the leagues and cups because the carrot at the end of it is huge financially for the club. We want Rangers and Celtic to do well in Europe as well for the co-efficient.

"It benefits every club in Scotland if teams do well in Europe and that’s what we’re aiming to do this year, and we’ll have a squad capable of competing.”
