In a Facebook post, Lee Hsien Yang revealed that he sought asylum protection as a last resort, citing attacks by the Singapore government against him, his wife, and his son. He accused the government of prosecuting his son, initiating disciplinary proceedings against his wife, and launching a prolonged police investigation.
Lee Hsien Yang expressed hope of one day returning to Singapore, emphasizing his status as a Singapore citizen. In an interview with The Guardian, he criticized the Singapore government, alleging its involvement in facilitating money laundering activities.
The Singapore government refuted these claims, asserting its robust measures against money laundering and illicit financial flows, in line with international standards. It emphasized that all individuals, regardless of their background, are subject to investigation and legal proceedings in Singapore.
The family feud between Lee Hsien Yang, his sister Lee Wei Ling (deceased), and their eldest brother revolves around the demolition of their family home as per their father's wishes. Lee Hsien Yang and his wife faced official investigations over allegations of providing false evidence in judicial matters related to Lee Kuan Yew's will.
Lee Hsien Loong, who recently stepped down after two decades as prime minister, transferred power to his deputy but retains a senior ministerial role in the Cabinet. Lee Hsien Yang, who joined the opposition party in the 2020 general elections, criticized the governing party for losing its way under his brother's leadership.
