LeBron James in tears as he arrives back in Los Angeles after Kobe Bryant's death

Lakers star LeBron James wept as he arrived in Los Angeles as an outpouring of grief followed NBA legend Kobe Bryant's death.

James, 35, arrived at LAX on the Lakers' team plane, after playing the Philadelphia 76ers.

The NBA star could be seen wiping away tears as he hugged those around him after getting off the aircraft.

On Saturday, James had surpassed Bryant's points record to become the third highest scoring player in NBA history.

Bryan paid tribute to his feat the day before his tragic death, telling James to aim for the number two spot.

He wrote on instagram: "Keep growing the game and charting the path for the next."

James had described Bryant as "one of the all-time greatest basketball players" as he said it was "surreal" to pass his record.

He has not spoken publicly since the star's death.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter were killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

A baseball coach along with his wife and daughter were also among the fatalities.

Tributes have poured in for Bryant , who is remembered as one of the all-time NBA greats.

Thousands of grief-stricken fans gathered outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles to mourn the star.
