Lebanon is currently facing an internal refugee crisis following Israeli military strikes that have forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. The country, already struggling with an economic crisis since 2019, is urgently seeking $427 million in aid for shelter and relief efforts over the next three months.
During a cabinet meeting, Information Minister Ziad Makary stated that Lebanese officials have engaged with UN organizations and donor countries to address the crisis. Makary emphasized that all aid would be channeled through a transparent mechanism via the United Nations, with implementation coordinated with the Lebanese state.
Approximately 1 million individuals in Lebanon have been displaced in recent weeks, with many seeking refuge in Beirut. Thousands are currently sheltering in schools located on the outskirts of the city's southern suburbs.
Makary highlighted that 874 shelters have been set up to accommodate the increasing number of displaced persons, particularly non-Lebanese individuals. The government is working closely with the UN Refugee Agency to ensure that adequate support is provided and that no one is left without shelter.
