Plans for students to sit some Leaving Cert papers in fifth year from next summer have been scrapped and will be further examined by the Department of Education, it is understood.
Education Minister Norma Foley announced last year that students entering fifth year in September 2023 would sit English and Irish papers that same summer. They would complete the remainder of their Leaving Cert in sixth year.
It was expected that this would start in 2024.

However, the Irish Mirror understands that Minister Foley and her officials have engaged with stakeholders over the last number of months to hear concerns about these proposals.
Stakeholders argued that students entering fifth year this September had experienced significant disruption to their education as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is anticipated that the Minister will now further examine when and how to implement this change.
It is also expected that Minister Foley will inform her Cabinet colleagues this morning [tues] about the new members of the Senior Cycle Redevelopment Programme Delivery Board.
Elsewhere, it is understood that Justice Minister Simon Harris will update Cabinet on the establishment of the Domestic Violence Agency.
