Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has made a “wishful thinking” claim about Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool boss is closing in on seven years in charge at Anfield, having taken over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015. Since then, the German has won six major trophies including a Premier League title and a Champions League.
With Klopp’s seven-year anniversary fast approaching, there has been talk about his track record at his previous clubs. At Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Klopp spent seven years as manager of each outfit.

This, combined with Liverpool’s inconsistent form this season, has led to criticism of the Reds boss in some quarters. But despite this, Neville has explained why Klopp will not be going anywhere anytime soon, and has explained why it’s “wishful thinking” from a Man United perspective to think the German could leave soon.
“I think I’d love Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola to leave Liverpool and City,” said the Sky Sports pundit, on the Gary Neville Podcast.
“I think at the moment when I see Liverpool, the reason Pep Guardiola hasn’t left City is because he’s got everything he wants here, they’re investing in the players he wants, they’ve got a fantastic team and where does he go that are many better?
“I say the same for Jurgen Klopp, those clubs won’t get better managers - let’s be clear - Jurgen Klopp is an absolute phenomenon.
“But I think to myself, where would Jurgen Klopp go now that you think would be better for him than Liverpool Football Club; than the way in which he’s dominating the Premier League, playing in Champions League finals?
“He’s competing against the other best managers in the world. I think for the moment I don’t think that’s fair, I don’t think that’s right, I think Jurgen Klopp has got that emotion in him.
“He’s got that little bit of Kevin Keegan in him where he goes when his time is up he will say ‘alright, I’m gone’.
“I don’t think that’s now. He looks like he’s enjoying it there too much, he enjoys the football, the league, Liverpool fans, it’ll be wishful thinking of Manchester United fans to think Jurgen Klopp is leaving, I don’t think that’s the case.
“He’s a phenomenal manager doing a great job at Liverpool, he’s just had a bumpy start to the season but they’ll get it right Liverpool, I’m sure.”
