Leap day deals: what you can get if you are born on February 29

We’re just days away from marking February 29, meaning 2024 is a leap year.

Taking place once every four years, a leap year is designed to keep our calendars aligned with the rotation around the sun.

The thing is, for those born on this day, it also means they technically celebrate their birthdays only once every four years.

According to studies, on average only 1,788 people are born on February 29 each year.

Luckily, however, there are many reasons to celebrate this year because there are also lots of freebies for those marking their leap year birthdays.

From free rides on the London Eye to free pints in Manchester, maybe it’s not so bad to be a leap day baby after all.

Here’s our rundown on the best leap year deals for ‘leaplings’ celebrating their birthdays on February 29.

Free ride on the London Eye

The first 100 people who celebrate their birthdays on February 29 will win a free ticket to ride the London Eye this year.

Usually costing up to £40 per ticket, this is a great way to catch a bird’s eye view of the city free of charge.

To get your free ticket, all you need to do is visit the London Eye ticket hall on the South Bank and prove you are born on a leap day (passports and driving licences are fine).

The offer is only valid for people born on February 29, however, so if you’re visiting with pals, it’s probably a good idea for them to book online.

Free pints in Manchester

Society in Manchester is offering free drinks (Society)

Are you too far away to visit the London Eye?

Nothing tastes better than a free beer (especially on your birthday), and one place in Manchester offers just that.

Head down to the food and beer hall Society and claim your birthday right with a free pint.

Just flash your ID at the bar to claim your birthday treat.

Win a £1,000 holiday voucher

Celebrating a birthday in gloomy February isn’t always fun, but LoveholidaysUK may have you covered.

“It's been 4 years since your last official birthday, and we think you deserve a day to remember. So, for the first time ever, we're giving away 5 £1,000 vouchers to those born on this unique date,” the holiday company says.

You’ll need to enter your details online, with winners being selected on March 6.

Free pizza nationwide

If you live near a Zizzi restaurant, then head down this leap day to bag yourself a free rustic pizza (PA)

If you live near a Zizzi restaurant, then you can claim a free rustic pizza on leap day.

Those celebrating their birthday on February 29 will need to show their ID at the restaurant and have an order worth more than £10,

Zizzi says you can enjoy a fabulous choice of pizzas, including the Rustica Piccante, the Rustica Meat Sofia, and the Rustica Margherita.

£50 off at the Real Greek

On the topic of Mediterranean food, the Real Greek restaurant chain is also offering leaplings a hefty birthday discount this year.

“When your birthday comes around once every four years, you have to make it an extra special celebration,” says its website.

Head down to your nearest branch, show proof of your birthday, and claim £50 off your meal.

Free Thai curry

According to Save The Student, Rosa’s Thai is also offering a free curry to leaplings this year.

There are no details about this offer online, Save The Student says you’ll just need to show your ID and buy a side and drink to get your free curry.
