Leaked Documents Reveal State Department Wants Staff to Report Anti-Christian Bias

A leaked State Department cable has revealed that the agency is urging its employees to report instances of perceived anti-Christian bias that may have occurred during the Biden administration.

The directive, distributed to all U.S. diplomatic missions, invites staff to anonymously submit examples of religious discrimination in hiring, policy enforcement, or other official actions.

The cable, obtained by The Associated Press, outlines that the reported incidents will be reviewed by a new interagency task force on anti-Christian bias. If allegations are substantiated, the individuals responsible could face disciplinary measures.

The document cites examples such as negative consequences for seeking religious exemptions to vaccine mandates, mistreatment over objections to preferred pronoun policies, and retaliation for opposing displays or content viewed as inconsistent with religious beliefs. It also includes concerns about forced removal of religious symbols from personal workspaces.

The initiative's rollout coincides with the promotion of Lew Olowski, a junior officer with a history of pro-Trump writings, to lead the department's Bureau of Global Talent Management. According to transcripts of his first speech also obtained by AP, Olowski referenced Christian scripture and described the Constitution as "our commandment," invoking religious language.

After swearing in the new class with the oath to the Constitution, Olowski told them:

"Oaths and words are different. Words are for talking. Dolphins can talk. Oaths are covenants. Animals do not covenant. Only God and man can make covenants"

Olowski continued:

"To an officer of the United States like you and me, the Constitution is our commandment. Its words are like the word of God and the words of the oath are our creation as officers. And these words are our beginning. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God"

Contextualizing the directive are ongoing legal and social debates about religious freedom. Just last week a federal judge denied a coalition of religious groups' request to block immigration enforcement near houses of worship, concluding the policy change didn't violate religious rights. Religious groups also argued that changes to the "sensitive location policy" scared undocumented people from attending church or seeking help.
