League of Ireland: Derry go six points clear as UCD held in Sligo

Derry City restored the six point gap to Shamrock Rovers at the top of the table with a dramatic 2-1 win over Finn Harps on Saturday evening.

A stunning Will Patching free kick a minute from time proved to be the matchwinner after Cameron McJannet had headed the Candystripes in front.

Harps striker Filip Mihaljevic pulled one back from the penalty spot in injury time, becoming the first Croatian ever to score in the League of Ireland, but it was too little too late.

In the evening game, UCD game within a whisker of grabbing their first win of the season as they travelled to face Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.

Second-half goals from Colm Whelan and Evan Caffrey looked to have swung the tie in their favour after Max Mata had headed Sligo in front.

It was the New Zealand international who found the net again six minutes from time as he nodded a Greg Bolger free kick past Lorcan Healy.

On Friday night, Rovers left it late to take all three points from Shelbourne at Tolka Park as sub Aaron Greene scored a spectacular winner.

Shane Farrell's second-half strike cancelled out Andy Lyons’ early opener and looked to have earned Damien Duff's side a point, but Greene's magic strike settled it at 2-1.

Stephen O’Donnell’s return to St Patrick’s Athletic finished in a stalemate as a fine performance from Dundalk keeper Nathan Sheppard ensured a scoreless affair.

And a late goal from Dean Williams earned Drogheda United a point at home to Bohemians, who had led from early on through a Dawson Devoy penalty.
