The leader of the main group behind Syria’s armed opposition, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, made his first public remarks since the rebels captured Damascus. In his speech at a mosque in the capital, Jolani declared the toppling of President Bashar al-Assad as a “victory for the entire Islamic nation.”
Jolani, who heads Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), a group formed from a former Al Qaeda affiliate, emphasized that the recent triumph marked a new chapter in the region's history. He accused Assad of allowing Syria to become a playground for Iranian ambitions, spreading sectarianism, and corruption. Jolani praised the efforts of the Mujahideen in purifying Syria with the grace of God Almighty.
Highlighting the impact of the war on Syrian households, Jolani expressed gratitude that Syria is now on the path to recovery. He mentioned that HTS was working to liberate people imprisoned by the Assad regime, emphasizing the nation's determination to reclaim its rights.
Addressing the crowd at Umayyad mosque, Jolani shared his personal connection to the land, stating that his heart longed for this moment after being away for over 20 years. He concluded by affirming that Syria is undergoing a process of healing and restoration.
