Leader of Glasgow City Council Labour group 'to step away' from role

The leader of Glasgow City Council's Labour party is to step away from the top job.

George Redmond has announced to members that he will not seek to be put forward for re-election as group leader at their upcoming AGM.

In a statement circulated to councillors on Friday afternoon, Redmond said it was a decision he had thought long and hard over.

It says: "After a great deal of thought and reflection, I’ve decided that I will not be seeking nomination for group leader at the forthcoming AGM.

"This is not a decision I’ve taken lightly, but I believe it is the right one for myself, and more importantly, for the future of this group."

Cllr Redmond, who serves Glasgow's Calton ward, returned to the City Chambers in May 2022 after five years away. He was first elected to office in 1999 and has held various prominent posts in local politics ever since.

When taking on the opposition leader's role, he declared that he would work to "shape the future of the city".

His statement added: "It has been an immense honour to serve as Labour's leader. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support, your trust, and your friendship over the years.

"We’ve faced challenges head-on, stood firm in our values, and worked tirelessly for the people we represent. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together.

Redmond says that he is confident Glasgow Labour will be in safe hands when he departs the top job.

He added: "Leadership is not just about holding a title; it’s about knowing when to make space for others. Over the past while, I’ve had quiet conversations with a few colleagues about how we ensure the group remains strong and forward-looking.

"I know that within this group there is no shortage of talent, experience, and fresh thinking. There are colleagues ready to step forward—and I have every confidence in their ability to lead with clarity and purpose.

"I also want to thank those who’ve supported me in leadership roles — office bearers, spokespeople — your contribution has made all the difference."

Redmond also stressed that he remains committed to driving forward the Labour party's goals within the council, adding: "While I’m stepping back from the leadership role, I’m not stepping away.

"I remain completely committed to this group and to the people we serve. I’ll continue to be an active, loyal, and passionate member of our team. It’s been a privilege."
