Lazio Fires Eagle Handler Over Controversial Social Media Posts

Lazio's mascot Olympia is recovered by falconer Juan Bernabe after escaping prior to the start of a Serie A soccer match between Lazio and AC Milan at Rome's Olympic stadium, Saturday, Jan. 24,

Lazio, the Italian soccer club, has made the decision to terminate the employment of the individual responsible for managing the team's eagle mascot. The falconer, who goes by the name Juan Bernabé, shared personal photos and videos on his private social media accounts featuring his prosthetic penis. These posts followed a recent penile implant surgery that Bernabé underwent for non-medical reasons.

In a controversial move, Bernabé appeared on the Italian radio show La Zanzara to discuss his decision to undergo the procedure. He expressed feelings of pride and increased masculinity as a member of Lazio. However, the Serie A club took a different stance and promptly dismissed the Spaniard from his role.

Lazio issued a statement expressing shock and disapproval of Bernabé's actions. The club emphasized the severity of his behavior and announced the immediate termination of all ties with him. Despite acknowledging the disappointment that fans may experience due to the absence of the eagle at upcoming home games, Lazio deemed it inappropriate to maintain any association with Bernabé.

The eagle, a symbol of ancient Rome, traditionally takes flight over Stadio Olimpico before Lazio's matches. Bernabé, on the other hand, stood by his decision to share the controversial images and expressed no regrets.

This is not the first time Bernabé has faced disciplinary action from Lazio. In 2021, he was suspended for making a fascist salute and chanting praises for former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini at the conclusion of a match.

Despite the club's decision, Bernabé remains unapologetic, stating his admiration for Mussolini during his recent radio appearance.
