A three-day lawyers strike across Uttar Pradesh began on Monday. Lawyers are protesting an alleged police lathi-charge on advocates in Hapur district last week.
The Uttar Pradesh Bar Council announced the strike from September 4 to September 6, asking the district bar associations to boycott their respective courts. The lawyers’ association also alleged harassment by the State police. All court related activities have come to a standstill in the State.

On August 29, police in Hapur district allegedly beat protesting lawyers during a lathi-charge, causing injury to at least half a dozen advocates. They were protesting a police case filed against a fellow lawyer, Priyanka Tyagi.
The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh asked the State Government to take strict action against guilty police officers. On August 30, the State Government constituted a three-member inquiry committee under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner Meerut to investigate the incident and submit a report within a week.
