Lawmakers To Commemorate D-Day With Parachute Jump

A group of U.S. lawmakers from the House of Representatives is gearing up for a special parachute jump at Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Led by Rep. Mike Waltz and Rep. Jason Crow, the bipartisan group, consisting of 10 congressmen who are veterans themselves, will travel to France to pay tribute to the U.S. and Allied troops who played a pivotal role in ending World War II.

Rep. Waltz emphasized the importance of unity and honoring veterans in today's politically divided climate. He expressed the significance of passing on the legacy of the veterans to younger generations through such commemorative events.

Rep. Crow, a former member of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and 75th Ranger Regiment, highlighted the symbolic nature of making the same jump as the units did 80 years ago. He stressed the importance of putting aside self-interest for the greater good, drawing parallels to the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.

The jump is set to take place on Friday, with the lawmakers participating in a practice run earlier in April to prepare for the event. The group, which includes a mix of military veterans from different eras, aims to honor the aging World War II veterans and commemorate the historic D-Day assault.

As the lawmakers come together for this unique tribute, they acknowledge the challenges facing the country today, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Despite political differences, the group is united in their mission to honor the legacy of past generations and advocate for democracy and freedom.

The lawmakers will don period paratrooper uniforms and board a vintage aircraft before making the historic jump to the Normandy beaches. The reenactment serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the thousands of U.S. and Allied troops who fought against Nazi control during the largest air, land, and sea assault in history.

Rep. Darrell Issa, an Army veteran, emphasized the importance of standing up against tyranny, especially in the face of current global challenges. The lawmakers have received assurances of safety for the jump, with Rep. Waltz confirming that all necessary precautions have been taken for the event.

As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaches, the commemorative parachute jump serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by the veterans of World War II. The lawmakers' tribute honors the sacrifices made by past generations and underscores the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of adversity.
