A 22-year-old law student tragically died after suffering a cardiac arrest while celebrating her birthday with friends in a hot tub. Alexandra Săsărman was found unresponsive in a jacuzzi at her family’s cabin near Bistrița, in northern Romania, during what should have been a joyful getaway.
She had travelled to the cabin with close friends to mark her 22nd birthday on April 12. But celebrations turned into heartbreak after Alexandra collapsed in the hot tub. Despite efforts to save her, she couldn’t be revived, reported the Mirror.
It’s believed the high temperature of the water may have triggered the cardiac arrest. Her sudden death has left her family, friends, and the university devastated. Alexandra was studying law at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and came from a well-known local family — her father a dentist, her mother a civil servant.
According to experts, cardiac arrest is typically caused by a disruption in the heart’s electrical signals, leading it to stop beating suddenly. When this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and vital organs, and the person quickly loses consciousness. Unless treated within minutes, it can be fatal.
The British Heart Foundation says thousands of people in the UK die from cardiac arrest each year, many without any prior warning signs. Conditions like arrhythmia or other inherited heart issues can increase the risk, even in young and seemingly healthy individuals.
In many cases, people don’t even realise they’re at risk. These silent heart conditions can lie undetected until a sudden, tragic event like this.
The news of Alexandra’s death has rocked her community. Friends, classmates, and professors shared emotional tributes online. One of her university professors wrote: “We don’t know why, we don’t know how something like this could have happened, we only know this: you left us so early and broke our hearts.”
They added: “Your beautiful face and soul will remain as vivid and precious memories. Smooth road to the stars, dear Alexandra.” Her funeral took place in the nearby town of Năsăud, where she was laid to rest beside her grandmother.
Alexandra’s sudden death has served as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be — and how sometimes, even a celebration surrounded by friends can end in unimaginable sorrow.
