A new extravagant restaurant in London is looking for a 'grape feeder' to join their team - but applicants have a strict criteria to follow. The brainchild of billionaire restaurant tycoon Richard Caring, Bacchanalia is set to open later this year in Mayfair. The restaurant's current job ads includes the unusual grape-feeding role where prospective employees will need 'gorgeous hands' as well as a 'basic grasp of Greek and Latin' in order to fit in with Bacchanalia's grand aesthetic.
Solidifying its high-end status from the offset, the eatery aptly borrows its name from a lavish Roman festival that celebrated excess and was known to be a wine-fuelled, raunchy affair.
The job poster even exudes luxury, as the text sits on a gold background with images of a Roman statue feeding another grapes.
The advert says that applicants "must have gorgeous hands and a basic grasp of Greek and Latin" and details the perks of the gig, which include "regular manicures" and the "finest food and wine".
The Berkeley Square opening is set to transform a former Porsche showroom into a completely new space, as Bacchanalia's website reads: "This is not merely a restaurant, it is a breath-taking feast for the senses, a gathering place to feel moved, immersed in another world. It’s imagination on a grand and glorious scale".
Owner Caring has called in a rather famous friend to help him deliver the vision, as artist Damien Hirst is set to make a quartet of huge artworks for Bacchanalia, including one of "winged lovers embracing on a unicorn".
After the unusual job advert was posted on social media by owner Caprice Holdings Restaurants, the group that owns the likes of Sexy Fish and Balthazar, people joked about applying for the gig and wondered whether it was real.
One person wrote on Twitter : "I have lovely hands and an A Level in Latin as well as a GCSE in Ancient Greek. Somehow I don't think I am what he's looking for".
Many others questioned whether the job ad was satire, as one said: "My first thought was to assume this was weird satire I didn’t quite get and my second, on realising it may be real, was that surely the actual Romans had grape feeders in London and then I didn’t really know where I was going with that".
The advert seems to have appeared as a full-page spread in the Sunday Times, so it looks as though Caring is serious about finding the perfect candidate.
The restaurant chain claims that the position will be 'London's first grape feeder' who will work against a backdrop of 2,000 year-old antiques and Sistine Chapel-style frescoes.
