Lavish Cork home set in 'private haven' and boasting links to Princess Diana goes on sale for €690,000

A lavish Irish country home with links to Princess Diana’s family members is up for sale with an asking price of €690,000.

Assolas House, which was built in Cork in the 17th century, is described as a “classically elegant period home”.

The country residence has a rich historical background, having links to Cromwell as well as the former Princess of Wales.

Alexis Roche, who once lived at Assolas, was a great uncle of the former Princess of Wales and died in 1914.

Assolas House was then passed on to the Bourke Family who have put the property on the market.

The six bedroom home boasts three stories and overlooks the River Marybrook, just 5 kilometres away from the town of Kanturk.

The listing on Home.ie states that the property offers good access to Cork City and the M8 route on the motorway.

The grounds have several historic features, including an old tower located near the ruins of a chapel on the site known as “Leppers Peep.”

This was a spot that allegedly housed leprosy sufferers. A small opening in the walls of the tower is believed to have been used for those isolating inside to view religious ceremonies going on in the chapel.

In more recent times, the function of the mansion has been primarily a tourist one. It served as a guesthouse in the 1960s and was later rebranded as a tourism business ran by husband and wife team, Joe and Hazel Bourke.

The Assolas Country House and Restaurant, which remained open until 2005, held a place in the Michelin guide and had several other hospitality accolades.

The owners say it is now time for a family to occupy the house.

It is being sold by agents Sherry Fitzgerald Country Homes and viewing is available strictly by private appointment only.
