Laura McAllister has received full support from the Football Association of Wales’ (FAW) in her bid for a berth on Uefa’s executive committee.
If elected, McAllister, who also serves as Deputy Chairperson of Uefa’s Women’s Football Committee and is a member of the Uefa Working Group on Gender Equality, would become the first Welsh representative on the Uefa Executive Committee.
And the FAW has said it is “pleased” to support the former captain in her quest this year, with the election set to take place on Wednesday, 5 April, 2023 at Uefa’s gathering in Lisbon, where McAllister will require the majority vote from 55 delegates.
McAllister’s pursuit comes nearly two years after marginally losing the election to serve as Uefa’s representative for women on Fifa’s ruling council in April 2021 to incumbent Evelina Christillinin from Italy. The campaign marked her second venture at achieving a spot on the world’s governing body.
Her first attempt was denied in 2016 by an 80-year-old rule which blocked a British candidate from standing for election.
McAllister won 24 caps at international level and has long been synonymous with Welsh football and sport, holding a number of high-profile roles in sports governance, including serving as chair of Sport Wales between 2010 and 2016 while being a board member at UK Sport during the same period.
McAllister is also recognised for helping to pave the way for the country's national women's football team.
