There's nothing better than putting on just washed clothes that emit a fresh, clean scent and one expert has shared an easy hack to ensure your garments smell sweet all day long.
There are plenty of fabric softeners out there that are packed with artificial scents to make clothes smell good. While these are effective, they are full of chemicals and can leave those with allergies feeling itchy.
Not only that, these single use products aren't the most cost effective. Luckily, the specialists at Laundryheap have revealed a simple, wallet friendly trick that will leave your clothes smelling absolutely delightful - all you need are some lemons and a mesh bag.
Lemons are well-known for their natural cleaning abilities, as the fruit is packed with citric acid that banishes grease. Now, Laundryheap's CEO Deyan Dimitrov has explained how to utilise its fresh scent.
The expert has shared his clever peel hack that simply requires a few lemons preferably organic, that cost as little as 30p each from Tesco. Explaining his method, all you have to do is peel it and allow them to try to "release their fragrance", but there are certain steps you should take, as not following instructions could damage your outfits.
Deyan says: "To start, gather a few lemons, preferably organic and free from chemicals or pesticides. Carefully remove the lemon peels with a knife (or even your fingers), making sure to separate them from the white pith inside, as the pith can stain your clothes.
"Allow the lemon peels to dry naturally by placing them on a clean surface for a few hours or overnight. This drying process helps them release their fragrance more effectively."
Over time, the natural citrus oils present in the lemon peels will slowly release their fresh scent, effectively neutralising unpleasant odours in your clothes. It's like having a natural deodoriser that leaves your garments smelling clean and revitalised.
"Once dry, place the lemon peels in a small mesh bag," Deyan adds. "Tuck the bag into your sock drawer, hang it in your wardrobe, or even slip it into your shoes overnight to combat foot odour. Just remember to remove it before wearing your shoes.
"Also, be mindful that the peels don't come into direct contact with your clothing to avoid creating any unwanted marks or stains."
As the lemon peels dry out and their fragrance fades, it's a good idea to replace them with fresh peels to maintain the desired freshness. You could also try this hack with other citrus fruits, like orange, lime or grapefruit peel.
Using organic lemons is recommended, as farmers usually cover the fruit in a waxy substance to keep them shiny. While this substance makes for a polished appearance, its main ingredient may leave your stomach churning.
Back in April, it was revealed that one of the wax's key ingredients is something humans would never usually eat which comes from beetles - shellac.
The unsavoury ingredient was revealed during an episode of Channel 4's Food Unwrapped, where presenters Kate Quilton and Matt Tebbutt travelled to Thailand, who were shocked to learn that the ingredient makes the fruit not suitable for vegans.
