Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Latvian capital Riga has become a hub of journalists, Russian intellectuals and Ukrainian refugees opposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Local Latvians, who are proud of their independence gained in 1991, do not want to turn back the clock. Hundreds of Soviet-era monuments have been torn down throughout the country.
