Latest update on Drake Maye’s concussion status for Week 9

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo provided a new update for quarterback Drake Maye on Friday morning. The coach indicated that the quarterback is still in concussion protocol.

The rookie suffered the injury near the end of the first half of last week’s game against the New York Jets. He went 3-of-6 passing for 23 yards, along with three rushes for 46 yards and a touchdown prior to the injury.

He has provided a spark to the Patriots offense this season, throwing for 564 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Patriots have been closely monitoring his status this week. Mayo addressed the situation when speaking with media members, while also adding that the quarterback will have a chance to clear protocol by Sunday.

“He is still in the (concussion) protocol and going through that process,” said Mayo. “He’ll be limited, he has been limited this week. But, he’ll be limited today as well.”

The Patriots already have a backup plan in case the quarterback can’t play.

Jacoby Brissett would resume his role as the starter, and rookie Joe Milton III would be the top backup. Tight end Hunter Henry was also seen taking quarterback reps earlier in the week.
