Latest travel rules for India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh including Covid tests

Brits' travel options are increasing with more and more countries opening up to UK travellers for non-essential reasons such as holidays.

However, the majority of destinations continue to have their own travel restrictions in place such as PCR test requirements, quarantine rules and, in some cases, their borders are staying closed to foreign visitors altogether.

Often, Covid travel rules are also dependent on your vaccination status, with some countries easing rules for those who are fully vaccinated.

Here, we take a look at the latest travel rules for India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Travel restrictions are correct at the time of writing but can change quickly during the pandemic. Always check the latest Foreign Office advice for a destination before planning or going on a trip.

India

All international flights to and from India remain suspended, however there are a limited number of flights between India and the UK.

There are strict entry requirements such as requiring to submit a pre-travel online declaration form, and having proof of a negative Covid PCR test taken within 72 hours before boarding your flight. Once in India there are strict rules for UK arrivals including a mandatory seven-day home quarantine, and another PCR test on day eight of your arrival.

It's also worth noting that separate to any Covid rules, the UK Foreign Office advises against travel to certain regions in India - you can find out more in the advice here.

Pakistan

All travellers aged six or over are required to have a negative PCR test result taken within 48 hours before travel.

For passengers aged 15 and over, you'll also be required to be fully vaccinated against Covid in order to fly into Pakistan.

Arrivals are subject to rapid antigent testing at airports in Pakistan - if you test positive, you'll be moved to a quarantine facility for 10 days, and you'll need to pay the cost.

Separate to Covid related rules, the UK Foreign Office advises against travel to certain regions of Pakistan - you can find out more here.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's rules depend on your vaccination status (The Image Bank)

The rules on entry in Sri Lanka depend on your vaccination status and pre-departure PCR tests. All UK travellers, regardless of vaccination status, need to fill out a pre-travel online form and have proof of Covid travel insurance (this is mandatory).

If you're fully vaccinated, you can visit without quarantine and don't need an on-arrival PCR test.

If you're not fully vaccinated, you'll need to stay in a 'Flexible bio-bubble' or one of the approved hotels for at least seven nights.

Unvaccinated children aged under 12 can travel with fully vaccinated parents.

Unvaccinated children of 12 to 18 years need to take a PCR test on day one at an approved facility and quarantine until they receive a result. If the result is negative, they can be released from quarantine and go home/to a hotel with fully vaccinated parent.

It's worth noting that children with at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be considered fully vaccinated.

Bangladesh

All passengers arriving from the UK need to show the following:

  • A medical certificate indicating a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours prior to departure (for passengers aged 12 or over)
  • Confirmation of your vaccination status - you'll need to have received the full course at least 14 days before entry for any quarantine exemptions
  • A completed Health Declaration Form and Passenger Locator Form provided by cabin crew.

Fully vaccinated Brits who have received their full vaccine course at least 14 days before arrival can visit without quarantine.

If you're unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, you'll be required to quarantine for 14 days on arrival. (This doesn't need to be in a government facility).

Separate to Covid related advice, the UK Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, not including the city of Chittagong or other parts of Chittagong Division. Find out more here.
