Latest travel entry rules for Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal and more

Major holiday destinations including Spain, Italy and France still have rules restricting entry for UK travellers two and a half years into the pandemic.

The holiday season last summer was one characterised by constantly changing border rules and regulations designed to stop the spread of coronavirus.

While the vast majority of countries are now open for tourist business once again - and quarantine hotels are hopefully a thing of the past - Covid stemming measures remain in place in many nations.

We have compiled a list of some of the key holiday destinations which still have coronavirus restrictions in place.

It's worth noting that the rules are constantly changing, so check on the Government's website before booking a trip.

Spain

If you are traveling to Spain you must show either proof you're fully vaccinated, a negative PCR taken three days before departure of a antigen taken one day before departure, or proof you've had Covid in the past six months.

These requirements do not apply to children under 12 years old.

Everyone who doesn't fit into the above categories must complete Spain’s Travel Health Control form no more than 48 hours before arrival.

You may also be subject to additional checks at the point of entry including a temperature check, visual health assessment, or testing on arrival.

Passengers may also be contacted and required to undertake a PCR tet at any point up to 48 hours after their arrival in Spain.

More information can be found on the Spanish government’s Border Health Controls webpage.

France

UK travellers heading to France must be able to show a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours or an antigen test result, taken within 48 hours pre-departure.

Alternatively, the French Government recognises any vaccination certificates that conform to EU norms.

This means your final dose must have been administered at least 7 days prior to travel for Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna or 28 days after a second dose of Johnson & Johnson.

Children under 12 are exempt from the requirements.

Italy

As of 1 May travellers heading to Italy no longer be required to complete a passenger locator form, and as of the first of this month all Covid restrictions on entering the country have been lifted.

That means Italy does not require any proof of vaccination, a negative test result, or a Covid recovery certificate to enter the country, regardless of your vaccination status.

However, all passengers entering Italy by ferry, train or coach must wear an FFP2 mask. Masks are no longer required on flights in, to or from Italy.

Portugal

If you’re fully vaccinated at least 14 days before you arrive, you can enter mainland Portugal and the Azores without needing to test.

If you’re not fully vaccinated, you’ll need to show proof of a negative PCR test professionally administered (taken no more than 72 hours before boarding) or a rapid lateral flow test (taken no more than 24 hours before boarding).

If you’ve tested positive for Covid in the last year, you can enter mainland Portugal and the Azores with a Covid recovery certificate showing you recovered from the disease, no less than 11 days and no more than 180 days before you travel.

Greece

Greece has now shed it's coronavirus entry rules.

Passengers arriving in the country do not need to show a proof of Covid vaccination, a negative Covid test, or a certificate of recovery from Covid. You do not need to complete a Passenger Locator Form either.

Cyprus

As of 1 June 2022, passengers travelling to Cyprus will not be required to present any sort of vaccination or recovery certificate, nor a negative Covid test result.

USA

Only those with an exception or US Citizens, US Nationals, and US Lawful Permanent Residents will be able to enter the US unvaccinated.

Everyone else, regardless of whether they've had Covid recently, must be fully jabbed.

Children 17 and under are exempt from the vaccination requirement, although they may need to take tests and then self-isolate if positive.
