Latest on Mikey Johnston's Celtic future as clubs show interest in winger

Mikey Johnston may have to leave Celtic in order to find first team football, with manager Brendan Rodgers saying his future will be decided over the next couple of weeks.

The winger came on as a substitute in last weekend’s win over Hibernian but was soon forced off after a collision with Hibs goalkeeper Josef Bursik. An ongoing eye socket issue from that incident will keep him out of Sunday’s League Cup tie against the same opposition.

Having enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Brom in the second half of last season, it was a surprise to many to see him playing any part for the Celtic first team in the early part of this campaign, but he may well be set to finally move on permanently from Celtic Park.

While Rodgers hasn’t closed the door on the winger staying on past the end of the summer window, it is believed to be highly unlikely at this stage, with interest from potential suitors.

“I'm open at the moment in terms of where things are at,” Rodgers said.

“I gave Mikey his debut back when he was 18 and played him.

“So, we've got a good relationship and we talk openly. I think he's at a stage, Mikey, where he'll probably want to play more.

“But he's worked hard over pre-season, put himself in a really good position. Some clubs have shown interest in him, but we'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks.”

Meanwhile, Kyogo Furuhashi is a major doubt for Sunday's match at Celtic Park after also being forced off last weekend with his ongoing shoulder issue, sitting out training at Lennoxtown on Friday along with full back Alistair Johnston.

"Certainly Ali will be fine," Rodgers said.

"Kyogo, we just have to have a little look at him."
