Latest injury update on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ ankle

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was scheduled for additional tests on his right ankle on Sunday after injuring it during the AFC divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about the injury after the game, downplaying it as just a “tweak.” He confirmed that Mahomes received an X-Ray during the game that came back negative for any breaks or fractures.

According to reports from both NFL Network and ESPN, the MRI results revealed a high ankle sprain, but no additional damage.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said to expect Mahomes to be very sore and limited during the course of the practice week.

After the game, Mahomes was insistent that he’d be good to play in the AFC Championship Game. This isn’t the first time that he’s played through a high ankle sprain either. In Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season against the Jaguars, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain, also finishing the game.

That ankle sprain hindered him at times throughout the early season, but he was able to play through it without any significant drop-off in his play. His mobility, obviously, took the biggest hit. A good sign, however, is that just like that occasion, Mahomes was spotted after the AFC divisional round win without any brace or boot on his right foot.
